Mixotrophic cultivation of Galdieria sulphuraria for C-phycocyanin and protein production

G. sulphuraria is a polyextremophilic microalga that can tolerate low pH, high temperature and osmotic pressure. We cultivated ACUF 064 in chemostat at biomass concentration of 134 to 243 g·m?2 aiming for maximal pigment content without compromising productivity. Autotrophy was compared ‘oxygen balanced’ mixotrophy with intracellular recirculation oxygen carbon dioxide. No differences were found C-phycocyanin (C-PC) protein between autotrophic mixotrophic cultures. In the productivity doubled photoautotrophic counterpart. aeration not needed 89% substrate converted into biomass. Mixotrophically grown contained 10% w/w C-PC which, combined its areal (49 g·m?2·day?1), sums up as one highest productivities ever reported (5 g·m?2·day?1) under 24 h/24 h illumination. extracted from more stable than currently used extracts Spirulina. significant loss color observed down pH 3 55 °C. had 62% favorably FAO dietary recommendation adults regarding amino acid composition. contains proportion essential, sulfur acids Chlorella, Spirulina soybean protein.
